BR413 is a group from Western Massachusetts that brings Brazilian music to audiences in New England. With Flavia Terra (vocals), Luiz Alexandre (guitar and vocals), Mark Sims (bass), and Nico Meneses (percussion), the group presents original arrangements for well-known songs from Brazil.
Historically, Brazilian music combines the African polyrhythmic traditions with melodic and harmonic styles from European dances, especially Portugal. What began with "modinhas," "batuques," and "lundus" in the 18th century evolved into a complex system of genres representing different regions across the country. BR413's repertoire highlights the richness of Brazilian music, covering styles from "samba" and "bossa nova" to "baião," "xote," "axé," "carimbó," "frevo," "xaxado," and more. See our Repertoire page for additional details.
The group is inspired by numerous talented singers and songwriters who have played a big role in shaping Brazilian music for over a century.
Noel Rosa, Dona Ivone Lara, Paulinho da Viola, Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Rita Lee, Alceu Valença, Nilson Chaves, Chico Buarque, Luiz Gonzaga, Martinho da Vila, and Ary Barroso are just some of the songwriters represented in the band's sets.
The band's performances bring together the Brazilian community in our region with American audiences eager to explore the richness of Brazilian music. Every other month, they host the Boa Tarde Brazil! event at FAME in Holyoke-MA, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. They also share their music at festivals, local venues, museums, and schools, reaching out to people of all ages. With engaging sets that can entertain and educate the general public, the band invites everyone to dance, sing, and immerse themselves in diverse rhythms and styles from Brazil.
